Ty Law to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame

February 03, 2019
After several years on the ballot, former Patriots cornerback Ty Law will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Law, who played for New England from 1995 to 2004, recorded 36 interceptions, three forced fumbles and 65 passes defended in 141 games with the team. The timing for the announcement that Law will be inducted couldn't have come at a better time, which he acknowledged last night.

Boston Herald:

“This is incredible. You couldn’t write this script (any better). It’s very special to be able to get this honor while my former team is playing,” said Law, who was emotional during the question and answer session with the media Saturday night. “And to play the team that started it off, you couldn’t have written the script better for me.”

Law had a knack for performing on the biggest stage. His most famous interception came in Super Bowl XXXVI against the then St. Louis Rams.

With pressure coming from Mike Vrabel, Rams quarterback Kurt Warner threw a ball that was intended for Isaac Bruce right to Law, who ran it back for a touchdown in the Patriots 20-17 triumph.

Law's other extremely memorable highlight was in the 2003 AFC title game against the Colts when he picked off Peyton Manning three times en route to Super Bowl XXXVIII against the Carolina Panthers.

Law said that when he heard a knock at his Atlanta hotel door, he thought it was room service. Turns out it wasn't.

“I would be a fool not to doubt because I didn’t hear (the knock) the last few years,” Law said. “I tried to stay positive, understanding you’re one of the last 15, and there’s always a chance you’ll get that knock. And when he first knocked, I thought it might be room service . . . but then he (Baker) was there, and it seemed like everything just left my body, the emotion. And when I tried to tell myself, you ain’t gonna cry on TV, I lost that bet.”

This was Law's third time on the ballot. And while he probably didn't need any extra help getting in, he still got some in the form of a Tom Brady letter. Brady fully endorsed Law's candidacy and said that he is the player he is now because he was able to practice against him.

Joining Law in this year's class are Ed Reed, Tony Gonzalez, Champ Bailey, Johnny Robinson, Kevin Mawae, Pat Bowlen and Gil Brandt.

“Getting the knock is the best feeling in the world”: Ex-Patriots cornerback Ty Law reacts to being voted to the Hall of Fame

February 03, 2019
He had to wait for quite some time, but yesterday former New England Patriots cornerback Ty Law was finally elected to join the Pro Football Hall of Fame: the 44-year old was one of eight players or contributors chosen. In his third straight year as a finalist, Law will finally join other Patriots greats such as John Hannah or Andre Tippett in Canton. Naturally, the whole process was an emotional one for the three-time Super Bowl winner.
“Getting the knock is the best feeling in the world, I cried like a little baby — I’ll probably have some memes out there at some point, I don’t care, it’s all worth it,” said Law at the NFL Honors ceremony on Saturday night, shortly after he was announced as a member of the 2019 Hall of Fame class. “When you actually get that knock, all emotion just left because you worked your whole life to get to this point. This is definitely the icing on the cake.”
Law will enter the Hall in August because of his impressive résumé: he has both posted gaudy stats over the course of his 15-year career — 10 of which in New England — and also played on championship teams. As one of the “founding members” of the Patriots’ dynasty, Law helped the franchise win its first three Super Bowls all while making some of the biggest plays in the history of both the organization and the league.
“A lot of people talk about that they would trade this for that, I wouldn’t be here without those other things,” said Law when talking about the weight of being named a Hall of Famer when compared to being a Super Bowl champion. “[I wouldn’t be here] without those championship rings, without those Super Bowls, without those big interceptions in the big games. You can’t get any higher than this in football.”
True to his Patriots upbringing, however, Law was quick to point out that he would not have reached this point without the support of those around him. “I’m not just representing myself: I’m representing Willie McGinest, Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison, Troy Brown, Lawyer Milloy, Otis Smith, all those guys that had such an impact on me as a football player and as a champion football player, now a Hall of Famer,” said Law shortly after his introduction (via Evan Lazar).
“I want the world to know that I wouldn’t be here without those guys, and somebody needs to look at those guys and give them an opportunity to stand here as well because this whole dynasty since Tom Brady was at the helm is no accident,” Law, who is now in the Patriots and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, continued. “This was hard work, this was dedication. I’m just one of the guys. I think there should be ore of me like this.”
“I’m not only representing Ty Law, I’m representing the Patriots and all the guys before me and with me that didn’t get the opportunity to do so,” he concluded, once again exemplifying the old Patriot adage that no single player stands above the team. Law, it looks like, has stayed true to this mantra even in retirement and now election to the Hall of Fame.

College of Health Science Kaduna operating illegally – Students tell court

January 30, 2019

Some students have dragged Mr Sankyai Obadiah, Provost of City College of Health Science and Technology, Zaria, Kaduna State before a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Zaria over alleged non accreditation of the institution.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the complainants, Hunaifa Musa, Yahaya Musa and Francis Luka, students of the college, are challenging the accreditation and approval of the school to its health courses.
In his submission, counsel to the complainants, Hussaini Abdu, said they were in court to challenge the legality of operations of the college.
He said the college had neither government approval nor accreditation by regulatory bodies saddled with the responsibility of approving the health courses before admiting students.
Abdu said they filed a direct criminal complaint at the court, adding that the school’s action was a criminal conspiracy and cheating which contravened the law.
He assured that they had all the necessary documents which proscribed the colleg to present to the court, yet it continued admitting students.
The defence counsel, Yusuf Sambo, argued that the complainants were compelled to sue the proprietor in view of his track records in the area.
He said some competitors wanted to use the complainants to achieve their mission of blackmailing the college.
In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Umaru Bature, adjourned the case to Feb. 11 for mentioning.
Bature granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties, who must be senior civil servants or two district heads or someone with landed property in Zaria.

Oxford Brookes Law Student achieves international recognition

January 30, 2019
In October, Craig Allen (left) was invited to Washington DC to a gathering of esteemed scholars and legal professionals from around the world.
Craig, who graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a First Class honours degree having studied the LLB Law and is currently studying law at doctoral level here, specialises in the interplay of the law and religion, and was invited to the International Religious Liberty Award Dinner in Washington, D.C. to receive a prize for the ‘Religious Liberty Student Writing Competition’, in recognition of his exceptional essay on practical and theoretical justifications for criminalising incitement to religious hatred.
Craig’s interest in Law and Religion was fostered during his undergraduate study at Brookes, particularly in the ‘Law and Religion in the 21st Century’ module. He was further able to explore this area of interest in modules, such as ‘Equality Law’, and through an independent research essay on minority rights as part of the ‘International Human Rights Law’ curriculum.  When given the flexibility to choose specific modules and therefore to study his fascinations, Craig was able to flourish. As he states:
“It was only during this time [undergraduate study] where I was exposed to an area of law that fascinated me that I began to excel in and enjoy my studies in whole (including Equity and Trusts, which no one ever believes!). As a result, I obtained a First-Class honours degree and was awarded the Eric Kemp Prize by the Ecclesiastical law Society for an essay on why religion should impact on the criminal law.”
Craig also discussed the importance of the support of his academic tutors. He had this to say about Professor Peter Edge, one of his lecturers and his academic advisor at Oxford Brookes:
“Studying Law at Brookes over four years now has provided me with an unforgettable bank of memories. The supervision offered by Peter at any level of study at Brookes has inspired and maintained my passion for law and religion. Further, any guidance offered has been carefully tailored to my interests and career plan. Brookes is a special place to study law, especially if you focus on any areas linked to religion.”
Professor Peter Edge is delighted with Craig’s success and international recognition:
“As his supervisors, we are tremendously proud that the quality of Craig's work has been recognised at this international level. He was recognised alongside exceptional students from the US, South America, and Europe. His doctoral project has a strong comparative aspect, and will have an impact well beyond the UK.”
Craig’s academic and professional development have seen his ideas, regarding the interplay of Religion and Law, travel from an Oxford Brookes seminar room to Washington, D.C., where he met with the world’s leading scholars, and the likeminded next generation of PhD and JD students, working in the field. He had this to say on his experience in the USA:
“Most recently, Brookes financially supported my trip to Washington, D.C. There I attended the International Centre for Law and Religion Religious Liberty Essay Awards dinner. The support allowed me to attend the ceremony and accept my award for an essay I had written on the practical and normative justifications for criminalising religious incitement under the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006. Additionally, it gave me the chance to discuss my paper and PhD topic with leading international scholars and senior officials from the US government specialising in law and religion. During the awards, I was also able to talk generally about current topics in law and religion with other PhD students from all over the world. We now keep in touch and discuss international developments and challenges within the field.”
Craig’s story exemplifies the career and academic possibilities available to Oxford Brookes students. His prize winning essay will be published by International Center for Law and Religion Studies (ICLRS) in 2019.

UH Blackstone’s National Criminal Advocacy Competition 2018

January 30, 2019
Two teams from the Oxford Brookes Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) programme have been highly successful in the leading national criminal advocacy competition.
This year the School of Law entered two teams into the 2018 UH/Blackstone’s National Criminal Advocacy Competition. The ‘A’ team of Alice Aubrey-Fletcher, Dana Bilan and Gregory Chilson were unbeaten, and narrowly missed qualifying for the national finals, while the ’B’ team of Bramble Badenach-Nicolson and Carola Binney qualified for the national finals in first place, and will now go up against 7 other teams on the weekend of 21-22 July.
The UH/Blackstone’s National Criminal Advocacy Competition was founded by the Hertfordshire Law School. It involves students undertaking a series of mock trials and pre-trial applications such as those relating to bail and character.
Advocacy competitions differ from traditional mooting as they take the form of a full criminal trial, including opening and closing speeches and the cross-examination of witnesses (role-playing actors).
Marc Howe, Principal Lecturer in Law and joint team coach, commented: “Both Oxford Brookes teams performed extremely well in their second round matches, in which they were drawn against the University of Lincoln and the University of Exeter respectively. A special congratulations to Bramble and Carola who qualified in first place overall.”
The School of Law regularly enters its students into mooting and advocacy competitions as part of its range of co-curricular activities aimed to promote graduate employability.
