Google Chrome WARNING: New update could save YOU from hacking attacks and MALWARE

February 03, 2019

GOOGLE Chrome is set for an update that will bring additional warnings designed to save users from hacking attacks and dangerous malware when browsing the web

Google Chrome is the American tech giant's browser that is by far the most popular around on mobile and desktop platforms.
The browser is regularly updated by the Mountain View firm, meaning new features and improvements are consistently introduced.
It appears Google's next upgrade for Chrome is centred around making users safer on the internet by alerting them to fraudulent websites.
She said: "What people are seeing in the URL bar really just isn't helpful to them as a security mechanism
"In a security professional’s ideal world, every web user would carefully inspect their browser’s URL bar on every page they visit, verifying that they are accessing the site they intend to be accessing.
"In reality, many users rarely notice the URL bar and don’t know how to interpret the URL to verify a website’s identity.
"An evil URL may even be carefully designed to be indistinguishable from a legitimate one, such that even an expert couldn’t tell the difference!"
The new Chrome warning is designed to alert users when they are on a fraudulent site like "paypa1.com" instead of "paypal.com".
Such pages take advantage of phishing methods as a platform for hack attacks and to deliver malware to users, as noted by CNET.
Essentially, the Chrome warning is designed to alert the user they should leave the site in question and not enter vital information such as credit or debit card details.
Discussing the new feature, Stark emphasised Google wanted the warning to be "informal rather than scary".

It is understood the user will have the option to ignore the warning if they choose once it has been released.
ZDNet recently posted images of the warning running in Chrome Canary.
Chrome Canary is an early version of the browser that is used to test forthcoming features.
In the example shown by the outlet, an alert appeared suggesting the user head to "paypal.com" instead of the "paypai.com" URL that had been navigated to.
Although a released date for the new warning has not been confirmed, its appearance in Canary means it may not be long before all Chrome fans receive it.
It is also unknown if the feature will arrive on smartphones in addition to desktops.

Google bans dozens of malicious photo-stealing Android apps from the Play Store

February 03, 2019
While Apple has kept relatively tight control over its App Store, Google has historically been a little looser with what it lets onto its own app storefront. Although the tech giant has made efforts recently to clean up the Play Store, there are still some bad actors getting through.
A report from cybersecurity firm Trend Micro has found a batch of 29 photo- and selfie-related apps that have all been acting maliciously towards the users that installed them. The bad behaviour ranges from money-making schemes like serving up inappropriate and fraudulent full-screen ads when users unlock their phone, to potentially more troubling activities like stealing user photos and uploading them to an external server.
What’s worse is that a majority of the apps in question have been downloaded thousands of times, and three of them have been installed over a million times each. Trend Micro states that a large number of these downloads occurred in Asia, especially India, where photo-related apps are exceedingly popular.
Dodgy tactics
Some of these apps have utilized tricks to hide the app icon to make it more difficult to uninstall, and when the aforementioned pop-up ads run, there’s often no indication that the particular app is the cause of them.
The majority of the full-screen ads use typical pop-up scam tactics, with text claiming the user has won something (usually an iPhone), or in some cases posing as a commercial pornography service, but clicking through the link will lead to a phishing scam where users must enter their details to ‘claim their prize’.
Among the 29 apps that Trend Micro uncovered, another offered to beautify a user’s selfies, although once the user uploads a photo to the external server, they are then served with a fake update prompt which leads, again, to a phishing site.
The bad actor is then free to use the uploaded selfies for such nefarious purposes as fake social media profile pictures.
After being made aware of the problematic apps, Google has removed them from its Play Store. However, as with any app you're considering installing, it’s always worth checking out the store reviews to see if any other users have found them exhibiting suspicious behavior.
Below is the list of the malicious apps discovered by Trend Micro, appearing from most to least downloaded:
  • Pro Camera Beauty
  • Cartoon Art Photo
  • Emoji Camera
  • Artistic effect Filter
  • Art Editor
  • Beauty Camera
  • Selfie Camera Pro
  • Horizon Beauty Camera
  • Super Camera
  • Art Effects for Photo
  • Awesome Cartoon Art
  • Art filter Photo
  • Art Filter Photo Effects

  • Photo Editor

  • Fill Art Photo Editor
  • ArtFlipPhotoEditing
  • Art Filter
  • Cartoon Art Photo Filter
  • Art Filter Photo Editor
  • Pixture
  • Art Effect

While it may go without saying, if you have any of the above apps installed then it's recommended you remove them immediately.

Nine Things That Can Make Your Smartphone Battery Last Longer

December 13, 2018
One problem every smartphone user can relate to is the problem of the battery life of their phones. Be it an iPhone or Android, no smartphone is immune to low battery problems.
If you are keen about making your smartphone battery last longer, here are nine things that can help.
Use a Black Wallpaper
If your phone uses an AMOLED display which is popular on Android devices than on the iPhone, each pixel on the screen takes a little bit of power to “light up.”
However, the more black pixels you can get on your screen, the better for your battery life. Set a dark wallpaper as your default, and try using dark themes on apps when possible.
Use Airplane Mode
Your iPhone or Android device will always try to connect to a cellular network when possible, and this can put a strain on your battery if you’re in an area with limited (or no) service.
Switching on Airplane Mode in Settings will stop this from happening. You however should take note of the fact that you won’t be able to make or receive calls while you activate this mode.
Switch Off Your Location Services
A lot of apps on iPhone and Android use “location services”. This can reduce battery life, so it is essential you take note of it. You can tell if an app is using location services by looking out for a small arrow on the top of your menu bar.
Be On The Lookout For Push Notifications
Each time your phone receives a notification from the network, it lights up and, depending on your settings, vibrates or makes a noise, too. This settings run down your battery, especially if you are the type that receives a lot of updates.
Download The Battery Guru App
If you’re on an Android device, download the Snapdragon BatteryGuru. This app is created by Qualcomm, the same company that manufactures phone processors. The app learns your usage habits and automatically adjusts features on your phone to optimize battery life.
While the app is not available for iPhone users, there are several other apps that help you avoid wasting power.
Clear Out Apps
Even if you’re not using an app, it can run in the background and sap battery life from your smartphone. Android devices allow you to “multitask” with apps running behind the scenes. It is best to force stop all the apps you are not using if you intend to conserve the battery of your phone.
Keep Your Phone Cool
If your phone’s lithium-ion battery gets too hot, it’ll discharge its energy faster and could even degrade the maximum life of the battery over time. Don’t carry it in your pocket if you can avoid it (especially if your pants are tight), and never leave your device sitting in direct sunlight or in a hot car.
Lower Your Screen Brightness
The brighter your screen, the more battery it’s eating. Lowering your screen brightness is easy as all you need to do is go to your settings and turn down the lights to keep your phone running longer.
Turn Wi-Fi off
Another simple-but-forgettable tip: If you’re not using your smartphone to connect to wireless Internet, switch the wi-fi settings to “off.” This will stop your phone from looking for networks, thereby saving resources.

How to stop your data from running fast

December 12, 2018

Smartphone makes keeping in touch with family, friends and associates easier. But staying connected means more data usage obviously

Sometimes, it could be frustrating when you open your phone and all you get is-‘you have no internet connection.’ Certain factors are responsible for this. It is important you set up limits and alerts to keep an eye on your data usage and maximize your data plans. Here are the tips

*How much data do you need
Most times, you may overestimate the data you need, so use cold hard facts to make the decision on which data allotment is best for you. Log in to your carrier’s website and review your data usage over the past few months. Select a plan that is higher than the amount of data you used during this period
*Set data alerts and limits
You can check your data usage on iOS devices by going to Settings > Cellular or Mobile data. These data stats do not reset each billing period automatically, so you have to remember to do it yourself. My Data Manager keeps track of your usage and even allows you to set custom alarms when you exceed a certain amount of data in a month
*Use Wi-Fi wherever possible
There is a fundamental rule for saving cellular data: If there’s Wi-Fi, use it. Chances are at both home and work; you’ll have some type of Wi-Fi access to connect. Even in many public places including parks, supermarkets, department stores, public Wi-Fi is there for your use. Get in the habit of checking when you’re somewhere new, and this will  lead to a substantial drop in cellular data usage

* Avoid using push email

When you use push email, your device is constantly looking for new messages. *Take your maps offline Navigation apps can be a surprisingly large hog on your data. If you’re using them all the time to find specific shops, restaurants, new city, maybe you should look at downloading the area map ahead of time. If you’re an Android user, this is simple. Just boot up Google Maps, search for the area you want to download, and then tap More info, followed by Download

*Change your browsing habits

It’s always better to browse the mobile version of the website on a mobile device, so avoid using the desktop versions of a site if you can. Also, despite taking up a fair amount of storage on your phone, the browser cache is actually a good thing here. By preserving your cache, you won’t have to download images from frequently visited websites every time you visit them

*Subscribe to streaming services with offline options

Videos are by far the biggest drain on your data, so if you stream a lot of YouTube content, then consider YouTube Red. In addition to the option of saving videos onto your device, you also have their music service built in. With other streaming subscriptions, you will want to check where they offer offline content too. Apps like Apple Music, Google Play Music allow you to create playlists for offline listening
